A witchcraft circle is an energetic boundary while you practice spiritual work. In addition to offering energetic protection and safety, a witchcraft circle also helps to focus energy towards your goal. Think of it like a protective bubble that also helps concentrate energy towards your spiritual work. Best of all, it's beginner-friendly!
What kind of protection does a witchcraft circle offer?
A witchcraft circle offers energetic protection for you, the practitioner, and the space you’re working in. It also protects the actual work you’re doing in the circle, whether that's witchcraft, divination, shadow work, or even Reiki.
The Benefits of Casting a Witchcraft Circle
There are many benefits of casting a witchcraft circle!
A witchcraft circle can help prevent:
- Outside interference with your energy, your space, and your spiritual work
- Ritual fatigue
- Symptoms of spiritual psychosis
These may not be a concern now, but it’s best to prevent them from happening instead of dealing with them after they do. A little energetic safety never hurt anyone, but the lack thereof can.
A witchcraft circle can also:
- Help keep your energy grounded
- Focus intention and energy towards your goal
- Make divination and channeled messages more clear
- Help you feel safe so you can concentrate on your spiritual practice
Feeling protected when doing spiritual work can’t be overestimated. Feeling energetically safe can help us reach deeper levels of our spiritual practice. If we’re too busy worrying, we can’t go deep.
How to cast a witchcraft circle
To cast a witchcraft circle, you’ll be using your intention and your authority as the sovereign of your energy / your space. Think of yourself as the guardian over your own domain (which you are).
Casting a witchcraft circle involves invoking the the elements to create an energetic boundary around you. There are other circle-casting methods, but the elemental circle is probably the most accessible and it’s quite effective.
The elemental circle invokes the protection of the elements (earth, air, fire, water, spirit) and the cardinal directions (North, South, East, West). All of these elements are present in our daily lives, so they’re easy to call upon.
The elemental circle is used in many different spiritual practices, including Wicca, witchcraft, earth-based paganism, the Golden Dawn, and more.
To cast a witchcraft circle, you’ll need:
- A compass, compass app, or a good sense of direction
- The elemental associations of the cardinal directions (given below)
- Something to cleanse with
- A wand, athame, or your hand
- Your intention
Elemental associations with the cardinal directions:
- NORTH - EARTH
- WEST - WATER
- SOUTH - FIRE
- EAST - AIR
- EVERYWHERE - SPIRIT
Steps to Casting a Witchcraft Circle
Here are the steps to casting a witchcraft circle, then we’ll go through each one in more detail:
- Tidy your space
- Take out your ritual supplies
- Cleanse your space and yourself
- Cast the circle
- Close the circle
Step One: Tidy your space
Tidying your space isn’t about your perfection, it’s about improving the energy of your space. Spot dusting surfaces and spot vacuuming is a good start. Organizing clutter is a nice touch as well. Remember, not perfect, just better!
Step Two: Prepare your ritual supplies
Take out the supplies and ingredients you want to use for your spell. This includes accessories you’ll need, such as lighters for candles & incense.
Step Three: Cleanse your space & yourself
When cleansing, be sure to open a window to let the old energy out and some fresh air in. In lieu of a window, intend that any unwanted energy leaves the space.
The easiest methods to cleanse are to use smoke from incense / herbs, or an energy cleansing spray.
To cleanse, go around your space counterclockwise. Use the smoke of the incense / herbs (on a fire/heat safe censor) or the spray. Go slowly if using smoke so embers don’t fly onto your stuff. Since your supplies are already out, they’re benefitting from the cleanse as well!
When you’re finished, cleanse yourself by spraying or smoke bathing your aura.
Bam, cleansed. You can close your window.
Cast The Circle
From the center of the room, you're going to move in a circle clockwise with your hand/wand/athame pointing outwards.
Depending on your space, either West or East will be after North. Adjust these accordingly. Note that when invoking Spirit, you’ll be facing North, but Spirit comes from all directions.
Begin by standing in the middle of your room and face North. Set the intention to cast a circle and create an energetic boundary in your space. You can say the quotes out loud (recommended), or mentally. Feel free to adjust the wording to better suit your practice.
- Face North - EARTH
“I call upon the protection of the element of earth to guard my sacred space.”
- Turn clockwise to face West - WATER
“I call upon the protection of the element of water to guard my sacred space.”
- Turn clockwise to face South - FIRE
“I call upon the protection of the element of fire to guard my sacred space.”
- Turn clockwise to face East - AIR
“I call upon the protection of the element of air to guard my sacred space.”
- Turn clockwise to face North (again) - SPIRIT
“I call upon the protection of the element of spirit to guard my sacred space.”
Take your hand or wand and spin clockwise in a circle to cast your witchcraft circle into place. Visualize a protective bubble forming all around your room, above you and below you.
Repeat your spin if desired - 3 is a good number.

You’re now ready to work in your circle. Make some magic!
Close the Circle
When you’re done with your spiritual work, it’s time to close the circle. An unreleased circle will just continue to build up energy, which is counterproductive in the long run.
To close your circle, you’ll be moving counterclockwise, the opposite direction. Remember to adjust East & West according to your space. The elements will be released in the opposite order they were invoked.
- Face North - SPIRIT
“I release the element of spirit from guarding my sacred space. Thank you & farewell.”
- Face East - AIR
“I release the element of air from guarding my sacred space. Thank you & farewell.”
- Face South - FIRE
“I release the element of fire from guarding my sacred space. Thank you & farewell.”
- Face West - WATER
“I release the element of water from guarding my sacred space. Thank you & farewell.”
- Face North (again) - EARTH
“I release the element of earth from guarding my sacred space. Thank you & farewell.”
Take your hand/wand/athame and spin counterclockwise from the center of the room, visualizing the circle coming down. Repeat however many times you spun to cast the circle.
Bam, you’re done.
Optional Additional Steps
I recommend another quick cleanse & blessing after you’re done. Cleansing and blessing after ritual helps maintain the energetic hygiene of your space. Of course, when you cleanse you must invoke. Here’s an easy prayer for this:
“All energetic spaces are filled with good energy, with blessings, and protections for my highest good. So be it.”
Final thoughts
A witchcraft circle is a simple way to protect your energy, your space, and create better spiritual experiences overall. It can be adapted to many spiritual practices, not just witchcraft, and helps to build a strong foundation for all spiritual work.
