The Autumn Equinox, or Mabon, is the official end of summer and the beginning of fall. It's the start of the dark half of the year, where the sun retreats and magic is afoot. The veil begins to thin at the Autumn Equinox, becoming the thinnest at Samhain where our connection to the Otherworld is strongest.
